Coming off the heels of it’s most successful racing season, the Manchester Running Company racing squad is ready to begin the 2016 campaign at the PLR ShamRock ‘n Roll 5k this Sunday in New Haven. The women’s side will be sending a formidable master’s and open squad while the men plan to send an open, masters and grandmasters team to this Sunday’s festivities.
In the interest of keeping things entertaining, and a secret from our competitors, we won’t announce who is racing for the MRC squad, or who we may have added/subtracted from the team. MRC plans to have a consistent presence in the masters divisions for both genders while continuing to stay extremely competitive in the open divisions. The PLR 5k course is a flat lollipop course near Toad’s Place in New Haven. The top two women’s open teams were separated by less than a minute in 2015, while the men’s side was just a four minute gap between the top two teams.
In 2015, the women’s open division was closely contested throughout the entire season. The MRC ladies took first at the Old Wethersfield 10k and Spring Street Mile, second at the Sea Legs Shuffle 10 Miler and at the New Haven 20k, while fourth at the early season Winter Wonderland 5 Miler and PLR 5k.
The men’s team placed in the top three at each race in which they had a team (all but the Sea Legs Shuffle) and added a second place grandmasters finish at Old Wethersfield, third place in the masters at Old Wethersfield and three masters top-6 finishes.
Mohegan Striders are the team to beat among the overall points scorers, while the SoundRunner Racing men’s and women’s teams appear to be the favorites in the Open divisions. Mohegan Striders men’s teams swept the masters, grandmasters, and senior divisions while the Milford Road Runners did the same on the women’s side to claim the women’s overall crown.
