The Manchester Running Company Open Men’s team (40 and under) is the USATF-CT Road Racing Grand Prix champions for 2014. The MRC men took first place at four races and second place at two races to claim the overall victory in the series. The men did not have a scoring team at two of the eight races.
Points are awarded in the series based on time performance of the top five runners on each team. The overall winning team for each race earns 11 points in the series, 9 points for second, 7 points for third, down to the seventh overall team earning one point. MRC accumulated 62 points for the season, edging out Milford Road Runners by just three points.
The MRC squad picked up wins at the Winter Wonderland 5 Miler in January, the ShamRock n Roll 5k in March, the Delaney Dash (4 mile) in May, and the Spring Street Mile in June. The men’s squad finished out the season with a second place finish at the Sea Legs Shuffle 10-miler and the Old Wethersfield 10k in August. MRC did not field a team at the Danbury Half Marathon in April or at the New Haven 20k on Labor Day.
Matt Maynes and Garrett Ash were the most consistent scorers as both appeared at every race in which the team scored. Brian Nelson figured prominently as well as he was the team’s top finisher at three of the four races in which he competed. Chris McCormack was a top five runner for five of the six scoring races while Jake Gurzler and Steve Clayton were integral in three of the races.
