The eight annual Finally Spring 5k and Kids Run will take place Saturday, April 9, 2016 in Manchester. A gathering of about 300 runners is expected for the 5k-ish trail run along with 30-40 kids taking to the trails for about a mile fun-run. Despite the small accumulation of snow on Monday morning, the race will go on as planned with a 9:30 Kids run and the 10:00 a.m. 5k. Walkers are welcome to participate, dogs are not allowed in the reservoir so please leave the pups at home; we also do not recommend strollers or any wheels on the course – it wouldn’t be fun for you.
The annual trail run is hosted by Manchester Running Company and supported by Dr. Tris Carta, DMD along with Primacy and Renewal by Andersen. Registration and packet pick-up take place starting at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday at Highland Park School in Manchester. All pre-registered participants will receive a pair of high quality Sock Guy running socks, and those who registered before March 17th will find a custom bib waiting for them. Pre-registration takes place online here, until Thursday evening. After the race stick around and enjoy some post-race refreshments from Big Y and our awards ceremony. Prize money goes to the top three overall and commemorative glass mugs go to the top three in each age division. All kids will earn a medal for finishing.
The course starts on Ferguson St. for about 150 yards before making its way into the picturesque Howard/Porter Reservoir trail system. After a mile of rolling hills, the course flattens out and actually is mostly downhill for the final 2 miles. The course’s highlight is a 1,000 meter loop of Porter reservoir on flat, crushed gravel.
The 2015 winner was Ben Joyce of Manchester, who outran Brian Nelson of Vernon by 10 seconds to take the $100 top prize. On the women’s side, Linda Yamamoto won for the third time, nearly a minute up on her closest competitor.
